According to "JGJ 133-2001 Metal and Stone Curtain Wall Engineering Technical Specification," when making components in the aluminum veneer industry, the aluminum veneer should be bent around. The folded edge of the aluminum veneer not only connects but also forms a reinforcement in the circumference of the aluminum veneer, which strengthens the panel and prevents deformation, so the folded edge is essential. What are the considerations in the aluminum bending process, given the importance of aluminum veneer bending? Today's article introduces technical knowledge in this regard, and I hope it is useful to you.


1. The technical proficiency of the operating workers

The relevant operating workers must be very skilled in the operation of processing equipment, by the relevant professional training before taking up the job. Aluminum veneer bending must be done with care to ensure their safety.



2. Aluminum veneer specifications size 

Direction: Usually aluminum veneer manufacturers of an aluminum sheet raw materials into the factory in rolls, the common width varies from project to project, mostly 1.5m-2.4m or wider. Aluminum veneer width should be given priority to 1.5m and below specifications, because this specification has the lowest price and the shortest delivery cycle. The plate width is too wide not only to increase the price but also to increase the deformation capacity as the size increases, which will easily cause the surface deformation of the workpiece and the decrease of flatness after installation.


Length direction: As the maximum length of the general bending machine is 6m, so I do not recommend processing more than 6m length of aluminum veneer workpiece. 


3. Determine the aluminum veneer plate seam

Building curtain walls can have a certain displacement capacity for the main structure, so the splicing between aluminum veneer plates for curtain walls often uses slit processing. The aluminum veneer façade is disconnected from the slit into independent plates and installed separately. The treatment of slit is mostly in the form of an open slit, gluing, plugging tape, etc. The arrangement of the slit is determined by the size of the divider. 


① The width of the slit depends on the visual effect, installation process, sealing requirements, etc. Visually, the width of the slit should be consistent or similar to the architectural style. Too small a slit can easily cause installation difficulties and tearing of sealant due to insufficient expansion and contraction. The plate seam is too large, the sealant dosage increased, and easy to blister, most of the common aluminum veneer glue seams are between 8mm to 18mm. 


② The depth of the plate seam is generally greater than the length of the aluminum plate folded edge. The shallow seam should consider whether to meet the minimum glue thickness required by the specification, whether the adhesive strip can be installed, and other issues. And when the slit is deep, the operating range of the installation tools should be considered, and the specific depth needs to be determined by combining the actual installation form and conditions.


③ The board seam also needs to take into account other factors, such as the installation sequence and the installation tools and processes.


4. Size of the folded edge 

The minimum value of aluminum veneer bending must take into account the size of the bending machine jig, as the bending edge is too small and the jig is unable to clamp the aluminum veneer to complete the bending. The thickness of 3.0mm aluminum plate minimum bending size of 9.5mm + 3mm = 12.5mm.


The maximum size of the folded edge should be based on the signed "aluminum curtain wall purchase and sale supply contract" document from the aluminum veneer manufacturer. In general, the folded edge size of aluminum veneer in a specific area is considered free production by aluminum veneer manufacturers and is not included in the cost. Larger than this value is regarded as the panel and not the folded edge, the conventional folded edge free value of 20mm. 


5. The length of the folded edge

The size of the commonly used aluminum veneer bending machine is 6m, which determines that the bending length is not larger than 6m. If special circumstances require the processing of workpieces larger than 6m, the planing groove treatment should be considered, i.e. grooving on the aluminum plate and bending by hand. An aluminum veneer is prone to deformation in the case of a large plate, and the strength of aluminum veneer decreases after the planing groove, and strict precision calculation is required when using the planing groove bending method.


6. Groove bending

When the bending machine is unable to bend due to factors such as extra length or inadequate tool space, planning groove bending may be required. Planing slot bending entails removing a portion of the aluminum veneer material at the bending location and then bending by hand. This method can compensate for some of the shortcomings of the bending equipment, but there are many flaws. Uneven bending may arise as a result of the uneven force applied during manual bending. By removing a portion of the plate, the strength of the bending point is reduced, which must be recalculated before use. The size of the outer rounded corners of the aluminum sheet after bending differs significantly from the size of the non-planing groove bending. We take a 3.0mm aluminum veneer as an example, the normal bending outer corner R≈4.5mm, and the planning groove bending outer corner R≈1mm.


7. Rounding off the bending edge

During bending, an aluminum veneer is pressed on the inside and drawn on the outside, resulting in rounded corners with uneven radius on both sides. The design typically assumes that the aluminum veneer material is uniform and that the strength remains unchanged after bending, and that the radius of the rounded corners of the center line of the aluminum plate is equal to the plate thickness. As an example, consider a 3.0mm aluminum veneer bending 90°, with the center line rounded angle R in 3, outside the male angle R outside 3 + 3/24.5, and inside the negative angle R3-3/21.5.
