How to choose aluminum honeycomb panels

1. Aluminum decorative panel

Aluminum honeycomb decorative panel materials are typically chosen from grades 3003, 5005, and others; low-alloy composition 1100 plate is used less frequently. Spraying or roller coating decorative surfaces—coating for polyester or fluorocarbon paint—outside panels are best sprayed and require more than three coatings with a paint layer thickness of 40 mm to ensure coating endurance. Aluminum panels must be anodized before painting to guarantee adequate coating adhesion and bonding strength with the honeycomb core, and the panel coating must match the criteria of national specification YS/T429.2-2000.

2. Aluminum backing plate

The aluminum honeycomb panel backing plate should be made of the same material as the panel, with an anodized surface and a protective coating on the side exposed to air. To avoid rusting of the aluminum panel owing to long-term exposure to air, the coating substance can be polyester, epoxy, acrylic, or other materials.

3. Aluminium honeycomb core material

The aluminum honeycomb core material is made of aluminum foil, and a special honeycomb node adhesive is processed on the aluminum honeycomb core production line. Factors affecting the performance of honeycomb cores include aluminum foil, nodal adhesive, honeycomb core specifications, and other parameters.

Aluminum foil

Aluminum foil should be 3003 grade, and the process should be strictly surface treated. For products with high strength or durability requirements, honeycomb cores made with 1100 percent pure aluminum foil should be used with caution.

Nodal Adhesive

The nodal adhesive should be an epoxy-modified, high-temperature curing adhesive that has outstanding environmental, high- and low-temperature resistance, as well as appropriate adhesive strength. Because of their poor strength, common adhesives tend to debond the honeycomb cores, resulting in overall damage and instability.

The honeycomb core's nodal strength is the basic basis for measuring its performance, and its nodal strength data should be 2.0 N/mm.

Honeycomb core specification

The thickness of the aluminum foil and the size of the honeycomb pore grid dictate the specification of an aluminum honeycomb core. Various standards of aluminum honeycomb have different densities and mechanical properties, as well as a wide range of prices. Honeycomb core specifications can be expressed in imperial units as the diameter of the inner circle of the honeycomb lattice and in metric units as the thickness of the aluminum foil or edge length of the honeycomb lattice, whereas our national standard is expressed in metric units as the thickness of the aluminum foil or edge length of the honeycomb lattice.
