The distinctions between aluminum honeycomb panels and aluminum composite panels

Aluminum Honeycomb Panel

An aluminum honeycomb panel is a sandwich panel modeled after a natural hexagonal honeycomb. The upper and bottom aluminum alloys are joined to an aluminum honeycomb core, forming an I-beam.


The honeycomb panel is coated with polyester or fluorocarbon. The rippling-free and self-cleaning properties of fluorocarbon make it suitable for exterior panels, whereas polyester coating is more visible in interior wall panels.


Composite Aluminum Panel

Sandwich panels are similar to aluminum honeycomb panels. The structure of the Aluminium Composite Panel (ACP) panel is made up of two thin aluminum alloys pressed together with a thermoplastic core to form the shape of a sandwich, hence the name sandwich panels.


Differences based on properties


1. Difference In Weight

Even though both panels are constructed from the same material, their weights differ. The difference in weight between the sheets is caused by their different designs. While honeycomb panels use a honeycomb core layer that is lighter than the plastic core and is available in 12mm and 25mm thicknesses, aluminum composite panels use a layer of PE or LDPE, which is made of plastic and available in thicknesses ranging from 3mm to 8mm.

Aluminum composite panels are well-known for their use in wall cladding, signage, and façade applications. Aluminum panels have also been used in the furniture industry because the sheets blend well with plywood or wood, giving kitchen or bathroom cabinets an opulent appearance.


While aluminum honeycomb panels are well-known for their use in aviation, aerospace, transportation, construction, military, and other industries. It is widely used for rocket fairings, car skins and doors, train bulkheads, and curtain walls for buildings due to its structural stability and low density.
