In recent years, aluminum composite panels have grown in popularity within the construction sector. Its use has been increasing, supported by energy efficiency, its low price and its wide constructive possibilities.
This type of material is specially designed for the construction of ventilated facades, both for construction and for renovation or rehabilitation. It provides adaptable solutions in all fields of architecture.
In this post you will learn everything you need to know about composite panels, including their characteristics, finishes, transformations and most popular uses.
ALUMINUM COMPOSITE PANELS, WHAT IS IT AND WHAT ARE ITS MAIN USES
How aluminum is obtained
Aluminum is the third most common element found in the earth's crust. In its natural state it is found in many silicates, and is extracted from the mineral known as bauxite, a sedentary rock with a high aluminum content.
As a metal, its low density and its resistance to corrosion, in addition to the fact that it is a reliable conductor, make it an extremely useful element for many industrial processes.
Currently, with China in the lead as a producer, it is estimated that around 60,000 metric tons are produced annually, of which 20% come from recycling.
Main characteristics of aluminum
Among its usual uses, incredible as it may seem, is the manufacture of mirrors (thanks to its optical properties), containers and cans or, of course, aluminum foil for domestic use. It has multiple alloy standards that cater to sectors as diverse as the automotive, telephone or construction industries.
Aluminum can be easily combined with other materials to create novel matvariousals such as those used in bricks or in composite panels.
Composition and preparation of the composite panel
The STACBOND® composite panel is a material composed of two aluminum sheets and a thermoplastic-based inner core that can house mineral fillers. It is specially designed both for newly built ventilated facades and for their renovation or rehabilitation. Its manufacturing standard consists of an outer sheet of 5005 aluminum alloy and an inner sheet of 3105.
It is divided into two groups based on the mineral load of its core and can become fireproof or fireproof, and being classified (according to the UNE 13501-1:2007 standard) as A2-s1, d0 and B-s1, d0 .
The composite panel is produced by means of a continuous lamination process. This process involves a sheet of the material that will make up the core being extruded and compacted between two sheets of aluminum that are unrolled at assembly. As a final step, the material is compacted and perfected and a protection film is applied.
Uses of aluminum composite panels
The most widespread application of this coating system is on ventilated façades, a type of multi-layer coating system that is highly effective at solving insulation problems because of the thermal behavior that it produces.
The most appealing aspect of a ventilated façade is that it allows the creation of a chimney effect between its layers. This effect generates continuous ventilation in the chamber, maintaining a stable temperature, increasing energy efficiency compared to more conventional systems. Thus, during the summer, heat is expeexpelled through air circulation.winter, the air circulation slows down, conserving the heat inside the building.
